Saturday 14 October 2006 - End of season holiday
As
the season wound down we enjoyed a fantastic family holiday in Assynt
and Orkney with some unbelievable sunshine on Stac Pollaidh (and some
believable rain in Orkney!).

Saturday 22 September 2006 - Arran
This
was my 5th Geowalks trip to Arran, and in keeping with tradition we had
a lovely day out on Saturday and lots of rain on Sunday. Still, given
the weather earlier in the week, and it being the Glasgow holiday weekend,
we felt honoured to have one day dry! This was in partnership with the
National Trust for Scotland on Arran, based at their comfortable bunkhouse
in the grounds of Brodick Castle. Inspiring stuff with a lovely range
of rocks in a small area, giant brachiopods, caves fit for a king and
two nights of apple crumble.

Saturday 09 September 2006 - Dunglass, East Lothian
Every so often on a Geowalks we come across a beautiful site and are amazed that it is not more widely known. The sandstone arches of Dunglass are a fantastic example, three arches in close succession, lovely clean sandstone with lots of features, and deserted on our visit as we walked the coast from Skateraw to Dunglass. All this just a few miles from Edinburgh - heaven!

Saturday 02 September 2006 - Northwest Highlands
The best rocks in Britain, there's no doubt about it. How convenient that a straightforward, easily recognisable sequence of rocks (they were easy to recognise, weren't they!) has been disturbed, faulted and folded by tectonic action along the Moine Thrust. It was perhaps a little bit wet at times, but we had fun. We were based at the Ullapool Youth Hostel for three nights, sampled the delights of Ullapool by night and the delightful rocks by day. Short excursions included Knockan Crag, Achmelvich, the Bone Caves and the imbricate zone near Loch Assynt where the Saltarella Grit layer is allegedly repeated 13 times by small scale thrusting.

Saturday 03 June 2006 - Isle of Mull
This was the first Geowalks trip to Iona and Mull, and I hope it becomes a regular. We were based in self-catering accommodation on the Ross of Mull, and had three full days on the rocks (with a coffee and cake stop or two to keep us going). The highlight for many people was joining Mark Jardine and his boat Freya for a sail to Staffa and the Burg - with the double benefit of getting Staffa almost to ourselves and getting to see the fossil tree with the minimum of effort (normally a day's tough walking to get there).

Saturday 06 May 2006 - Isle of Eigg
A trip organised for enthusiastic "students" of the University of the Third Age in Edinburgh, East Lothian and the Borders. We stayed at the fantastic Glebe Barn, and were supremely well catered for by Karen. Eigg's geological richness make this small island a must-see for anyone interested in the rocks of Scotland. The tough section of coast between Laig Bay and the Singing Sands is my favourite geological place, with dykes and concretions forming bizarre shapes and chasms. And I had the privilege of making it along to the far end of the Sgurr ridge for the first time, where two eagles wheeled against a perfect blue sky.
